Trivandrum Napier Museum History, Ticket

The Museum Complex located in the heart of the Trivandrum city has everything for its visitors who reach here for tourism, study or research. The institutions inside the complex are potential education centres to all regardlesss of their age, sex and social status. Whereas Museum offer enormous opputrunities to learn about the Art and Culture the Zoological and Botanical gardens have a lot to say about the rich natural heritage of the state.

The Napier Museum

Built in the 19th century, the Indo - Saracenic structure boasts a "natural" air conditioning system and houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.

One of the earliest museums in India established by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1855. Only a very few museums like the Indian Museum Calcutta, Madras Government Museum are its contemporaries. In 1874, the old Museum Building was pulled down and the foundation for the new Museum building named after Lord Napier, the governor of Madras presidency was laid. The architectural masterpiece was designed by Mr. Chisoln, the consulting architect of the Madras Government and the construction completed in 18880. This 120 year old structure is a landmark in the city with its unique ornamentation and architectural style with gothic roof and minerets.
It offers an array of display of artistic, cultural and antique importance comprising of sculptures in bronze and stone, carvings of wood and ivory, lamps, textiles, traditional musical instruments, kathakali models, a treasure of numismatic collections representing Chera, chola, Pandya dynasties of southern India. The brobze display fascinating images of Siva, Vishnu, Parvathi and Lakshmi in Silpa sastras. The metal images illustrate the features of South Indian sculpture style of 8th to 18th Century such as Agasthya, Vishnu etc. manifest Dravidian influence. Shiva with Sati is an unique and the rarest exhibit found in the museum. Each and every exhibit has a wonderful and fascinating tale twined around it.
The Zoological Park
Open 1000 -1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays
One of the first zoos in India, it is located in a well-planned botanical garden. With huge trees like frangipani and jacaranda dotting the sprawling lawns and wild fowl swimming in the lake, it is like a small jungle in the heart of the city. A reptile house with different species of snakes is also located in the premises.


Sree Chithra Art Gallery
Open 1000 -1700 hrs. Closed on Mondays and Wednesday forenoons
Located near the Napier Museum, this artgallery displays select paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Svetlova and Nicholas Roerich and exquisite works from the Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore schools of art in India. The collection also includes paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali.
